Wine Description
(From 2009 Vintage)
Winter precipitation was near normal until February, followed by a very dry spring. Unseasonably cool temperatures delayed bud break by about 10 days and slowed canopy development. Late spring wind and frost added to the early season challenges, leading to a smaller than normal crop. With diligent attention by the vineyard staff, the outcome was a positive one. Ripening took place in ideally mild conditions characterized by sharply contrasting daytime high temperatures and overnight lows. Harvest was surprisingly smooth, finishing a few days earlier than average on October 21. In the barrel, the 2008 wines displayed balance, massive structure, length and elegance. L’Esprit des Pavots literally means “The Spirit of the Poppies.”
This wine was grown in the original Les Pavots vineyard blocks that we completely replanted between 1996 and 1999 due to phylloxera. In replanting, we spared no expense, utilizing only the rarest and best clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The 2008 vintage wine made from these young vine blocks captures the “spirit” of the Les Pavots terroir. With all the features which characterize Les Pavots terroir: blueberry, vanilla beans, licorice, chocolate, cedar and coffee; the 2008 L’Esprit des Pavots is spectacularly rich and intense. Younger vines exhibit bright fruit like strawberry, black cherry, and plum in addition to red pepper, adding to its complex bouquet. The palate is full-bodied, rich and concentrated, exhibiting abundant, youthful yet supple tannins and a lingering finish. Fruit forward and enjoyable at release, this wine should age well for a decade.
Winemaker's Notes
Aromas of cassis, blueberry, lavender and coffee interspersed with oak nuances of cedar and tobacco. Rich, ripe fruit impressions on the palate accentuated by silky, yet assertive tannins. This wine possesses a unique balance, full body, concentrated extract and a fine finish. Les Pavots is a fusion of traditional French and neoclassical Californian winemaking techniques. The wine is ready for near term enjoyment and has the richness, extract and structure for five to seven more years of aging. ...

Wine & SpiritsPeter Michael's Bordeaux program is built around their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine, Les Pavots. The 2008 Les Pavots, a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc and 11% Merlot, offers up notes of roasted coffee, cocoa, chocolate fudge, black currants, licorice and a hint of truffles. This full-bodied, beautifully rich red boasts an opulent texture, impressive purity and a long finish. Impressively made with impeccable attention to detail (it is sorted berry by berry rather than grape bunch by grape bunch), this 3,500-case cuvee should drink well for two decades read more...or more. Quality-wise, the 2008 is just a notch behind the stratospheric 2007. (hide)

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines15% Cabernet Franc; 12% Merlot. Concentrated black cherry fruit is matched at every turn by a wealth of very rich, smoky oak in this fleshy young Cabernet. Firm tannins lend proper structure to this compelling effort, and while one might be seduced by its fairly round and supple entry and early texture, it is sure to look better with three to four years of cellaring. Still, it overall depth and wonderfully fruity center seem to guarantee improvement for twice that long and more.

Rich, Carmel, soft long finish
