Wine Description

(2011 Vintage) The Chianti Classico Riserve comes from a selection of grapes from vineyards which are more suitable for long maturing. Vinified in steel with a maceration of about 20 days, and as a second passage, it is aged in smaller wooden barrels for about 18 months, to then rest for a minimum of 3 months in glass. Composition of the grapes : 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo and Colorino.

Rich dark plums with brown sugar. Weakish flat mid-palate, possibly due to age. Good finish.

(2007 Vintage) The estate's 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva is delicious. Black cherries, herbs, tobacco and spices come together in a dark, brooding expression of Sangiovese framed by big, massive tannins. This finish is long and intense. Today the wine requires serious patience, but there is little question that it will be superb in a few years time. I can't wait to see what Monsanto has done with its top of the line Il Poggio in this vintage. In the meantime, the 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva is a highlight; and a terrific value as well. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026.
