(From 2013 Vintage) 2013 has much in common with many of the vintages from the “mighty nineties.” A dry mild spring induced early stress in the Cabernet vineyards. As summer rolled in, and the fog remained at bay, we moved diligently through the blocks adjusting the vine canopies to maintain dappled sunlight on the developing berries. While nighttime temperatures preserved the acidity that most appreciate in this wine, the consistent warmth of the season is really what drives the flavor profile in this vintage.
There is the trademark Montelena earthy, berry fruit, smoky and rich with many subtleties. On the palate it has a big juicy front, a very full texture and many layers of flavors in a rich cross section of fruit and terroir.

But more black cherry fruit on palate and on finish and more muscular than a Bordeaux. One could hold this longer, but so very enjoyable now. Opened to celebrate my son Kevin's 21st birthday. Just the right balance of fruit and tannin/leather. (1178 views) Tasted by mxpbuy on 8/2/2011 & rated 95 points: Sampled 8/1/11. Decanted about 30 minutes. Took another 45 to fully open. Very little sediment. Dark color. A little Bordeaux funk. Excellent layers of blackberries, black currant, some black cherries, dusty tannins, dried herbs and hints of mint and cedar. Still another 5+ years on this one. (1106 views)
