  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
(2004 Vintage) Shafer's Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnays are not known for their subtlety, and this highly ripened, big-bodied version stays true to form. It delivers plenty of fruit and a full complement of sweet oak with palate-coating viscosity and no small measure of heat as the price of its considerable richness. It is kept on course by its fine sense of balance all the same, and, if not a wine for drinking with delicate foods, it will fill the bill nicely when the menu calls for something extra.

(2006 Vintage) If you are looking for a special, special occasion wine, I found one for you. This buttercup yellow colored wine opens with a light lemon and ripe pineapple like bouquet. On the palate, this full b...
  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
(2006 Vintage) Showing up here in its usual full-bodied, highly ripened stance, Shafer's Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay is one again big and somewhat blustery with ripe apple fruit notes and lots and lots of rich oak in tow. It is a little bit tighter at the back end than has been the norm but that extra energy will allow the wine to be a good partner to savory fish dishes, as well as to a wide variety of chicken and smoked meat dishes.

(2006 Vintage) Aromas of lime, lemon drop, minerals, talc and spices. Dense, chewy and juicy, with a dusty, tactile texture and a classic dryness. A superripe flavor of apricot nectar is enlivened by bright acidity and a note of citrus pith. This large-scaled chardonnay harmonized nicely with extended aeration: I'd give it another year in the bottle before pulling the cork.
  • Planet Grape
(2014 Vintage) Soft, round, silky and fresh with notes of lemon zest, apple, peach, almond croissant and chalk. Beautifully balanced and a wine of great finesse.
