The first wine Susan and Jonathan Pey made under their own label was a Merlot they sourced not from Napa Valley, but from Marin County. The label was Mount Tamalpais, named after the majestic mountain of Marin, and we sold cases and cases of it off the shelf. Fast forward to today and Jonathan is still making great Merlot, along with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay but now they've moved on up to Napa Valley and bottle it under their Textbook label. This 2017 is 92% Merlot with 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 65% of the fruit came from sustainably farmed vineyards in the Oak Knoll sub appellation of Napa Valley, while 35% came from the Oakville District. The wine was aged for 14 months in 35% new French oak barrels which were air-dried for two years by Francois Freres in central France. The end result is a wine of good depth and structure (thanks in part to the addition of Cabernet) along with a wonderfully silky, almost plush mouth feel. One would be hard pressed to find a better, more well balanced Merlot from Napa Valley at this price!
