This powerful yet finesse filled wine is 100% Malbec from 48 year old vines that was aged for 14 months in 35% new and 65% second use French barrique barrels. The Luca Malbec consistently delivers a wine of nobility, presence and stature that drinks well upon release but really shows its complexity with time in the cellar. Deeply saturated flavors of red and black cherry as well as notes of chocolate and coffee make up the character of this full bodied Argentine beauty. Laura Catena, daughter of Nicolas Catena, who established his family's winery as Argentina's undeniable leading producer, is an incredibly talented woman in her own right. The Harvard and Stanford educated doctor splits her time between the E.R. of San Francisco General and directing the winemaking in Mendoza. She created the Luca label after her first born son to capture the essence of many of Argentina's long forgotten old vine vineyards and carefully sources only the best fruit to go into her wines.
Robert ParkerThe peachy 2014 Catena Malbec is juicy and with good ripeness, a soft style with round, sweet tannins and some toasty notes with sweet spices. Somehow this is a more approachable and drinkable than the 2015 at the moment. This is a very complex blend of many vineyards, points of harvests and different vinifications and aging to produce around one million bottles, which at this quality level is impressive.
