The wine has the sweet black cherry and dark berry fruit character that distinguishes California's finest Cabernet Sauvignon's, and its ripe fruit is supported by velvety tannins and well-integrated oak. This is a wine of excellent depth, richness, and length on the palate.
International Wine Cellar(2003 Vintage) Good ruby-red. Currant, mocha, espresso and chocolate on the nose; more deeply pitched than the merlot. Then sweet, full and dense, with ripe flavors of redcurrant, mocha and tobacco. Finishes with substantial but nicely buffered tannins and a slightly roasted quality.
Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(2003 Vintage) Mondavi's basic Cabernet starts out well enough with attractive aromas of ripe cherries and fairly rich oak, but its simple flavors run afoul of blunting tannins, and its fundamental fruit is lost to tongue-drying astringency. In need of some five or more years of softening, it never finds a sufficiently fruity voice to convince us that it will age into beauty.
