Winemaker's Notes

This Cabernet showcases anise and blackberry fruit with notes of pine and toast, combined with great textural length and a lingering nish.

(From 1998 Vintage) Napa Valley. Ever one of the chunkier, more sinewy Cabernets to be had, La Jota's premier bottling again comes up as one of the bigger wines in the crowd. Its complex aromas of toast, milk chocolate and tobacco are echoed in kind by its broad, highly extracted flavors, but its blustery tongue-curing tannins are the sort that will take years to resolve. Only the patient should find room in their cellars for this one as it will not reach its peak for a decade or more.

  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
(From 2000 Vintage) Strident ripeness and intense oak are the two legs upon which this bottling is somewhat perilously balanced, and convincing Cabernet character never quite comes into play. Fairly rich, but also tannic, tangy and shot through with peculiar suggestions of dill, the wine is more enigma than solid success and its future is far from certain.
