Wine Description

(2013 Vintage) La Carrière is the steepest rockiest vineyard on our Knights Valley estate. Situated between 1,200 and 1,700 feet above sea level on steep mountain slopes, some exceeding forty percent in grade, the vineyard has ideal southern and southeastern exposures. Shallow rocky soils provide excellent drainage, low fertility and the lowest average yields on the estate. Typically La Carrière offers the leanest most citrus like fruit profile of any of our Chardonnays coupled with vivid “liquid minerality” that speaks of sea salt and wet stones. The name translates to "The Quarry."

(2004 Vintage) Rating: 93(+?) - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 126, May/June 2006 ($75) Medium, slightly hazy yellow. Crystallized citrus peel, underripe pineapple, spices and a whiff of minerals on the nose. Then juicy, sweet and intense, with fruit-driven flavors of peach and nectarine complicated by liquid stone and saline notes. Wonderfully glyceral wine with a very long finish of stone, minerals and peach. This will deepen in pitch as it evolves in bottle.

(2003 Vintage) Rating: 93(+?) - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 120, May/June 2005 ($70; 15.2% alcohol) Clearer light yellow color. Dee p aromas of apricot, citrus skin, nutmeg and crushed stone. Juicy, stony and firmly built, if youthfully tight. Very pure, vibrant, precise flavors of minerals and candied lime and lemon. Finishes extremely dry and minerally, with terrific grip and some youthful austerity. Some of the best blocks of this vineyard went into the Point Rouge ...
