2009 Folie a Deux Menage A Trois Red

Wine Description

(From 2012 Vintage) Anthony Giglio While the racy label may grab your attention, what’s inside the bottle will keep it. With Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Ménage à Trois brings Bordeaux and California together in one sexy, silky red. This blend offers something special from each grape, with deep, jammy blackberry from the Zin, a gentle, rounded texture from the Merlot and structure and richness from Cab. It’s easy drinking, food friendly and unquestionably fun. Marnie Old: It’s easy to see why this California blend is wildly popular—just stick your nose in the glass and it’s hard not to smile. Like a catchy pop song on the radio, it’ll hook you with its splashy aromas of raspberry jam and cherry-vanilla ice cream, underlined with a thumping baseline of bourbonlike oak. Let your hair down with this wine—no pretensions here—and try it with a little ice on a hot summer day. Mark Oldman: Three is not a crowd when you see how this medium-to full-bodied red combines the unlikely partners of Merlot, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. Juicy, ripe strawberries and blackberries mix in a swirl of generous fruit, with a bit of vanilla and the slightest touch of tannin present to quicken the pulse. The finish is complex, well integrated and velvety. This selection is a natural choice for summer cocktail parties and cookouts.

Winemaker's Notes

Ménage à Trois red brings together three strange bedfellows: Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. To add complexity and retain character, each variety was fermented separately, then blended together prior to bottling. On top we’ve got Zinfandel, a saucy tease that brings blackberry and raspberry jam to the relationship. Merlot, with its generous mouth feel and red fruits, fits perfectly in the middle. The rich flavors and firm tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon make it the ideal candidate for the bottom layer of the trio.

Aroma- faint fruity notes - pear and spice. Medium garnet color - semi- opaque. Light to medium body, cherry flavor -sweet for a red. Little to no tannins, crisp acidity. Medium to long finish. A very solid everyday drinking wine. After meal or by itself. Would go well with glazed red meat on the sweet side - e.g. a.fruity or tangy barbecue glaze.

A perfect threesome of Zinfindel, Merlot, and Cabernet. This wine exposes the fresh, ripe, jam-like fruit. Zinfandel adds a juicy character, Merlot mellows and Cabernet adds backbone. Forward, spicy and soft.

Although young tasting, it was smooth and soft with a nice finish. Would pay around $8.00. If bought again, try and save for another year!

Nice pleasant wine to drink. Nice balance. Cherry on the tongue and a bit sweet. But lasts nicely on the tongue.

Big and bold dark fruit flavors, but the cloying sweetness was way over the top and destroys this wine.

Even if you don't think you like red wine, the fresh, ripe, jam-like fruit of this three-grape blend may change your mind. Zinfandel gives it a juicy character, Merlot mellows and Cabernet adds backbone. Forward, spicy and soft, this delicious dalliance makes the perfect trio.
