It’s the 2009 Coteaux du Loir “Le Rouge Gorge”, Domaine de Belliviere. With the estate in both Jasnieres and Coteaux du Loir, this lesser known appellation was once thought of only as a source of country wines. With the soils either too moist or too marshy, Christine and Eric Nicolas have had to work hard to produce good wines, but they have more than met the challenge. The vineyards have been converted to biodynamic in the past three years, having been organic for decades; most of the vines are 15-35 years old. Craigie General Manager, Meredith Devinney cautions that this is a wine that will NOT be to everyone's taste. Dark ruby in color, the wine is medium to light- bodied with aromas of topsoil and the forest floor. Smoke, cherries, earth, and pine come to the fore in this mineral-driven wine. From this description you can probably tell that this is not a wine for quaffing alone -- it is made to work with food! And just not any old food - think earthy food like our octopus, steak, pied de cochon, croquette, roast chicken and mushrooms. “When it works, it really works,” Meredith says, “and we are more than proud to serve it.” The Rouge Gorge (robin) is an homage to the bird that flies over the land in the spring.
