Dear Friends, Once again, I must abandon the normal “Weekend” concept in favor of a single (limited) offer that tugs at the Rhone-o-phile’s shoe strings. I am always in favor of more Cote Rotie (rather than less) and his wine has come such a long way in the last 1-2 years – almost as if it has graduated from grade school, confidently on its way to high school. The first time I tasted the Classique two years ago, the 2009 aspects were just too much - the vintage had obfuscated the soul of Clusel-Roch and that was not a benefit. They told me to wait a few years, to give it time for the vintage to fold into the terroir and boy were they right. Circa June 2012, this wine has sprung a leak of intrigue and it’s now only hinting at what’s under the surface. The building blocks are there, all we have to do is wait (the WS came out with an 2009 Cote Rotie retrospective a few weeks ago and their impression was very similar to my own and to Josh’s below). What I'm trying to say is, if you are searching for moderately priced Cote Rotie for the cellar, with every bit of the potential complexity of examples in the {$80-120+} range, Clusel-Roch’s 2009 Classique should be very high on your list... [Tanzer’s IWC (Josh Raynolds – Mar/April 2012): “($69); Bright ruby. Complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes black and blue fruit preserves, star anise and cracked pepper, with slow-building florality. Juicy, palate-staining black raspberry and blueberry flavors are brightened by a zesty mineral quality and become sweeter with air. Closes with a whiplash of spices and impressive length. 92pts”] [Jancis: “Bright crimson. Rich as well as peppery on the nose. Very polished and sleek. Real finesse and appetizingly ripe fruit. Great purity. 17.5/20.0”] 2009 Clusel-Roch Cote Rotie (Classique) - {$48.91} [(IWC92)]
