From the fruit of Leoville-Poyferre’s younger vines in the heart of St Julien and mirroring the style of its big brother, the Pavillon is strikingly pure and refined. The nose gives bright, fresh fruit - morello cherries, sloes and hints of cedar and oak. Very much an example of a modern, flashy St. Julien, the palate is dense and opulent - full of the soft, yielding fruit for which the 2009's are famous, all held taut by a fine weave of tannic structure. There is pin-sharp detail here - generous enough to enjoy now, but clearly with enough depth to fill out over the next year or two. Exceptional value, this offers a glimpse of the 100 point Grand Vin, for a tenth of the price.
