Appellation AmericaChardonnay Musqué is the spicy clone of Chardonnay that found its way into various Canadian vineyards in the 1980s. Until recently, some growers were scrambling to replace it with more mainstream clones. What has changed its fate is the rising popularity of unoaked Chardonnay. This fruity clone is ideal for a wine of that style. At Blasted Church, winemaker Kelly Moss has taken this advantage a step further. “This wine is unique among unoaked Chardonnays,” she says. “It is dry.” It is a logical winemaking approach. The variety has such intense, spicy fruit that it comes off sweet without any help from residual sugar. This wine begins with powerful floral and spicy aromas. On the palate, it is richly concentrated, with flavours of green apples, citrus and melons. The wine is clean and refreshing, with a nice dry finish. The aromas and flavours are nicely preserved under screwcap closures. 1,000 cases were made. 89 points.
