Wine Description

(2013 Vintage) Often described as one of Australia’s unsung heroes, Grenache is naturally lighter in colour than Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon but continually provides us with wonderful big fruit flavours. Yalumba is extremely fortunate to have access to some of the oldest Grenache vineyards in the Barossa –with fruit for this wine sourced from vines planted between 1898 and 1973.

    Yalumba bush wine Grenache 2008 A touch darker than a Pinot noir, still a light colored wine with pink hues. Dark brick in color On the nose strawberries, cherries (a lot) and spices. Plums too Some ashy mineral notes too Not a very strong aromas Cherries cone very forward on the mid palate. Much stronger than on the nose. A bit syrupy. Cough medicine... Sure some low sugar residue too. Almost off dry Still a very decent wine for the price. 18 bucks at SAQ We paired it with an Indonesian dish (chicken on a peanut/coconut spicy sauce) served with rice and green beans. It worked quite well. The absence of tannins played well with a creamy sauce, it is a flavorful wine, as the dish and the little residual sugar helps cool off the spiciness. But a but thin and hot - lacking in grip and body. Generally not for me. I might like this on its own, chilled on a hot summer day, but otherwise no thanks. fatherdamo - 1/14/2011 Rating: 86 quite a simple nose of bright and fresh red fruits. with a lot of swirling one can tease out a little more depth with tiny hints of aniseed and violets. the palate starts with lovely balance and then falls off a cliff as the heat from the alcohol carries everything away leaving it a little short. i don't mind a bit of heat and i really want to like this wine but i can imagine a lot of folk struggling with it. for me it gets away with it because the fruit is so fresh and it has enough acidity. not the best wine with my supper, a pasta dish with chicken, vermouth, mushrooms, cream and thyme.
