Woodward Canyon Chardonnay

Wine Details

Wine Description

(2014 Vintage) This 2014 Washington State Chardonnay comes 70% from the Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard and 30% from the cool climate Celilo Vineyard in the Columbia Gorge AVA. It was 100% barrel fermented in French Burgundy barrels, 20% of which were new. Woodward Canyon is one of Washington state's finest producers and one of the originals. More known for their excellent Cabernet Sauvignon blends, they also have a great following for their Chardonnay, and for good reason. The oak integration is spot on with nary any evidence of wood flavor as it is there to add texture, weight and substance to the excellent quality of the fruit. And to let the tasty, varied flavors of apple, pear, peach along with a nice kick of hazelnut that comes through on the crisp, somewhat tart finish. This is a really well balanced, elegantly styled Chardonnay and we are proud to have it represent our Washington selection.

(2007 Vintage) Pale color. Subtle aromas of stone fruits, lemon drop, apple and hazelnut. Sweet, lush and broad, but with good freshness and shape to the stone fruit and orange flavors. Proprietor Rick Small doesn't stir the lees of his chardonnay anymore, and partial malolactic fermentation has left this wine with sound acidity. The crop level here was just 2.5 tons per acre, according to Small.

(2006 Vintage) Long on oak, fairly spicy and faintly nutty in tone, this weighty, firmly built wine makes up in richness for what it may lack in the way of obvious fruit. It is solid but a still bit tight in feel, and it strikes us as one that will find genuine benefit with a few years of further development.
