(From 2010 Vintage) The color is black cherry red with a pink halo. The nose is dominated by oak spice, with plums, Altoid’s spice, chocolate powder. This is a silky smooth wine up front with a good bit of spice showing up at the mid palate. It tastes of rich, extracted blackberry, sweet blueberry and milk chocolate. The mid palate changes things up with a stew of spices, along with a nice contrast of strawberry. The tannins make their presence known but do not get in the way and the acidity is balanced. The finish is full and long.
(From «nv» Vintage) We selected our Syrah from several vineyards along the California Coast. A majority of our fruit came from Paso Robles, which, like San Benito, produces powerful, ripe Syrah grapes with dense, dark fruit and abundant round tannins. Monterey, which is slightly cooler, gives the lifted, bright red berry notes, higher acidity and a slightly more angular tannic structure. We were lucky to get some wonderful fruit from the Fess Parker vineyard in Santa Barbara; these grapes are dark, black and tannic, with interesting savory notes.
