Wine Description

(2007 Vintage) This wine is wonderfully expressive, with aromas of roasting coffee beans, bittersweet chocolate and black cherries. Savory and sweet on the palate, there's a hint of soy that complements the chocolate and berry fruit, gritty but integrated tannins and a firm core that suggests it would benefit from a little cellaring.

Aromas of tomato leaf, cedar and cherry lead to firm, modest flavors of red currant and lead pencil. Drink now through 2016. 8,500 cases made. –TF

  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
(2005 Vintage) Heavy-handed oak is two-steps ahead of fruit here, and, while the wine may be full-bodied and highly extracted, it is also too tannic for its own good and suffers from a real lack of balance and brightness. Size and richness are often good things in wine, but they need fruit for balance. A big drop in price from its first posting is no help here.

(2001 Vintage) The 2001 Merlot (a 6,354-case blend of 94.3% Merlot and 5.7% Cabernet Franc) exhibits fragrant aromas and flavors of espresso roast, coffee beans, smoke, chocolate, and loads of berry fruit. Dense plum/ruby in color with a hedonistic personality, this is a heady, full-bodied wine to drink over the next 7ndash;8 years. This is a top-flight single-vineyard wine aged completely in French oak, which is in total contrast to the wines made at Silver Oak.
