2007 Sterling Vineyards Three Palms Vineyard Merlot Napa Valley

Winemaker's Notes

(From 2001 Vintage) Deep ruby color. Huge cherry/berry fruit, with spice, dark cocoa powder and sweet toasty vanilla oak in the nose. This wine is big and dense with ripe, bright dark fruit flavors with hints of tobacco and French oak vanilla, it finishes with elegantly concentrated tannins.

(From 2004 Vintage) 19% Cabernet Sauvignon; 4% Petit Verdot. Despite the wine's famous site, it is surprisingly on the dry side for Merlot, and the ripe cherry and cassis notes that do show up in nose and flavor are required to fight through fairly tough tannins. It will likely age into a smoother, more open effort with time, and the vineyard's past performance both with Sterling and with Duckhorn provide reasons for optimism.
