Featuring a bright, uniquely approachable style, these wines honor the Mirassou family’s heritage while appealing to a new generation of wine enthusiasts. Viticulture Notes California producers had a very challenging 2008 harvest as they were hit with frost, heat, drought, and wind all in one season. However, most producers were able to overcome these trials to produce a crop that was smaller than usual, but of very high quality. The early growing season was characterized by very dry weather and then frost hit in the spring, which was the worst frost reported in decades. As the vines were blooming in May, an early heat wave in many regions caused the vines to set a smaller crop than normal. The summer months were fairly moderate and warm, with an early harvest beginning in August. Another heat wave hit in early September which increased sugar levels rather quickly and left winemakers frantically rushing to pick the ripening grapes. Cooler weather came in late September and slowed harvest, which was completed in most regions by the end of October. Overall, the crop was smaller this year from the previous 2007 harvest, but the fruit was balanced and the quality remained high. Winemaking Notes The grapes that went into making the 2008 Mirassou Pinot Grigio were sourced from a number of California’s premier wine-growing regions, including Sonoma County and the Central Coast. The combination of both cool and warm growing regions contributes a gentle complexity to the flavor profile by allowing the crisp acidic fruit characters from our coastal vineyards to blend with the ripe fruit characters from the inland vineyards. The grapes were harvested in late August to mid September at 23-24° Brix. At the winery, they were whole cluster pressed to minimize harsh phenolics. The juice was cold settled before racking to the fermenter which results in a cleaner fermentation and more elegant mouthfeel. The must was fermented in stainless steel tanks for approximately 14-21 days at 60 - 62° F. After fermentation, it was racked for settling and blending. The wine was aged in the bottle for two months prior to release. Taste Profile Our 2008 Mirassou California Pinot Grigio reveals intense aromas and flavors of peach, pear and citrus with crisp, lively acidity create an exceptionally refreshing wine. This versatile wine pairs beautifully with spicy dishes as well as grilled poultry or seafood. Our Pinot Grigio is ready to enjoy immediately upon release and should be able to age in the bottle for one to two years.
