Featuring a bright, approachable style, this wine honors the Mirassou family’s heritage as the pioneer of California Pinot Noir while appealing to a new generation of wine enthusiasts. Viticulture Notes California producers had a very challenging 2008 harvest as they were hit with frost, heat, drought, and wind all in one season. However, most producers were able to overcome these trials to produce a crop that was smaller than usual, but of very high quality. The early growing season was characterized by very dry weather and then frost hit in the spring, which was the worst frost reported in decades. As the vines were blooming in May, an early heat wave in many regions caused the vines to set a smaller crop than normal. The summer months were fairly moderate and warm, with an early harvest beginning in August. Another heat wave hit in early September which increased sugar levels rather quickly and left winemakers frantically rushing to pick the ripening grapes. Cooler weather came in late September and slowed harvest, which was completed in most regions by the end of October. Overall, the crop was smaller this year from the previous 2007 harvest, but the fruit was balanced and the quality remained high. Winemaking Notes Our 2008 Mirassou California Pinot Noir is made with carefully selected California fruit from several regions including the Central Coast and Sonoma County. The California appellation allowed the winemaker to choose the best fruit from each region, which acts as the foundation of this fruit forward style of Pinot Noir. Our winemaker, working in close partnership with the viticulturists, created an intensely flavorful Pinot Noir that reflects the terroir of these regions. To protect the flavors of the fruit, the grapes were harvested in the cool of the evening and early morning and cold soaked prior to fermentation. The grapes were destemmed but not crushed to retain whole berries for fermentation. The grapes were fermented on the skins, but pressed early to avoid harsh tannins from the seeds and skins. After the must was inoculated with the Premier Cuvee yeast strain, fermentation occurred at an average of 80-85°F for five days. After primary fermentation was complete, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. The wine was then racked and bottle aged prior to release. Taste Profile Displaying fresh fruit aromas and flavors of cherries, strawberries and red currants, our 2008 Mirassou California Pinot Noir is a bright reflection of our heritage as the pioneer of California Pinot Noir. This wine is at its best if enjoyed within a year of release, but can age in the bottle for up to three years if carefully cellared.
