(2008 Vintage) The Chapoutier family have been making wine in the Rhône Valley since 1808, but it is since 1990 when Michel Chapoutier came to the helm that the wines really began to speak of their origin. Michel Chapoutier’s viticultural vision is highly impressive. His dedication to understanding each parcel of land and allowing it to make the best natural wine it can is breathtaking. He has worked tirelessly to improve every practice in his company investing in his staff as well as in the winery and vineyard - much of his estate is now farmed biodynamically. This entire range is the fruit of extensive research and Michel Chapoutier’s labour. The vineyard belonging to Cornas holds a high reputation, and has done for very many years. Charlemagne, Saint Louis et Louis XVth are often referred to in context to Cornas. On the eve of the French Revolution people spoke of the " Black wine " produced in Cornas and in the 19th Century it was given equal rating with the wines of Chateauneuf du Pape. Similarly to Côte-Rotie and Condrieu, hard working conditions on the lands led to large scale rural exodus. 'Les Arènes' displays a sark red colour with some violet hints. It is very ripe fruits, raspberry and blackcurrant jams, a bit of smoke, liquorice and pepper. Blackberries, spices, morello cherryin the mouth . It is dense, strong tannins with good length. (hide)
