Winemaker's Notes

J. Lohr's Merlot grapes are grown in Nacimiento-Los Osos, Arbuckle-San Ysidro and Arbuckle-Positas complex soils on their Los Osos vineyard in Paso Robles, where these well-drained but relatively poor soils have chalky or gravelly components. The resulting wine is dark, youthful and plum red in colour. It has complex aromas of blueberry, raspberry, violet and dried cherries with a bouquet of vanilla, caramel and toasted oak. The ripe and ample tannins and lovely Merlot fruit character are supported by good acidity creating a substantial wine with layers of complexity that make it read more...an excellent choice to accompany hearty foods. The ideal compliment to the heartiest lamb, beef and wild game dishes. (hide)

The aroma is dominated by blueberry, raspberry and cherry fruit and layered with lifted spicy, cedary oak. The palate is greated by an array of red fruits similar to those on the nose, with tar, cedar and forest floor adding complexity. The wine has a full mid-palate and finish that carries the wine through, with a lingering hint of fruit and licorice spice.
