Forward, enticing aromas of ripe blackberry fruit are lifted by notes of anise and clove. The richly structured mid-palate resonates deep black fruit with hints of balanced toasty oak.
J. Davies Vineyards is located on the historic Schramsberg property in Calistoga, CA which is part of the Diamond Mountain District appellation of Napa Valley. Originally founded in 1862 by Jacob Schram, the 217 acre property was re-established by sparkling wine producers, Jack and Jamie Davies in 1965. Over time, it was discovered that the vineyards surrounding the winery, which were planted in 1965 to the traditional Methode Champenoise grape varietals of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, were better suited to the Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.
90 Points, Wine Spectator:
"Alluring for its creamy flavors and texture, with a mix of fresh, snappy currant, anise, blackberry and toasty mocha-laced oak. Firms up on the finish, where the minerally notes provide a cleansing aftertaste. Drink now through 2012. 1,478 cases made. –JL" (2/29/2008)
89 Points, Wine Enthusiast:
"More tannic than in previous vintages, and not as immediately rich, this Cab-dominated Bordeaux blend will benefit from decanting. It needs some air to open up and reveal its heart of cassis. Will develop with six or so years of aging, but doesn’t seem like a longterm cellar candidate. S.H." (12/15/2007)
