  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
(2001 Vintage) If a bit less stylish than past Hartwell efforts, this bottling takes on chocolatey and cappuccino-like notes and relegates fruit into a useful but secondary position. It is full and fleshy in feel with chocolate and hints of leather in its flavors, but a somewhat dry, hot-edged finish. It displays a certain inner harmony born of its desirable provenance, and, it drinks well enough to warrant a bit of quiet keeping
  • International Wine Cellar
(2001 Vintage) Saturated ruby-red. Roasted plum, mocha and chocolate liqueur on the inviting nose. Sweet and lush in the mouth, with very ripe, mellow flavors of currant, cherry, tar and melting chocolate. This has the fat of a topnotch merlot. Long finish features substantial but thoroughly sweet tannins.
