WA93 drink 2013-2026 The Colonial Estate’s two flagship wines come from their own property. The 2006 Exile was sourced from a single 140-year-old vineyard with the blend consisting of 85% Shiraz, 10% Mourvedre, and 5% Grenache. Opaque purple/black in color, it exhibits a captivating perfume of toasty oak, smoke, black pepper, truffle, blueberry pie, and blackberry liqueur. Complex, silky-textured, and nicely balanced, this layered, lengthy wine will continue to improve over the next 4-6 years and have a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2026. The Colonial Estate is the Australian project of Englishman and Bordeaux chateau owner Jonathan Maltus. His first vintage in Australia was 2002. The entry level wines are line-priced at $30 offering excellent bang for the buck.

(2002 Vintage) Rating: 90/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 115, July/August 2004 ($200; a blend of 75% shiraz, 20% mourvedre and 5% grenache; like the Emigre, this is 15.5% alcohol and comes from a crop level of barely a ton an acre) Bright medium ruby. Deeply pitched aromas of black cherry, chocolate, mocha and woodsmoke. Thick, superconcentrated and dense; fatter than the Emigre but less vibrant, with lower-toned, somewhat saline flavors of berries, chocolate, and...

(2004 Vintage) Dark, saturated violet. Huge, expansive bouquet of tarry blackcurrant, blueberry, blackberry, kirsch, espresso, smoked meat and exotic spices. Amazingly concentrated dark fruit flavors expand and almost overwhelm the palate, showing remarkable intensity and power. The creme de cassis and candied licorice tones fill out and gain even more weight through the finish. There are substantial tannins here but they appear to melt into the powerful flavors. A superb wine with a velvety texture and compell...
