Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(2006 Vintage) Showing up here in its usual full-bodied, highly ripened stance, Shafer's Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay is one again big and somewhat blustery with ripe apple fruit notes and lots and lots of rich oak in tow. It is a little bit tighter at the back end than has been the norm but that extra energy will allow the wine to be a good partner to savory fish dishes, as well as to a wide variety of chicken and smoked meat dishes.
Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(2003 Vintage) With its sweeping aromas of caramelly oak and ripe-apple fruit making for a very dramatic start, Shafer's latest comes through in the mouth with big, mouthfilling flavors that live up to the scale and richness of the nose. It is quite well-balanced for a wine of its size and ripeness, and it carries more than enough fruity stuffing to handily buffer the evident edge of heat that is very much part of its finish.
Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(2004 Vintage) Shafer's Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnays are not known for their subtlety, and this highly ripened, big-bodied version stays true to form. It delivers plenty of fruit and a full complement of sweet oak with palate-coating viscosity and no small measure of heat as the price of its considerable richness. It is kept on course by its fine sense of balance all the same, and, if not a wine for drinking with delicate foods, it will fill the bill nicely when the menu calls for something extra.
