2006 Robert Mondavi Winery Fumé Blanc Napa Valley

Winemaker's Notes

Blend: 92% Sauvignon Blanc, 8% Semillon In 1966, Robert Mondavi created the first Fumé Blanc. This bottling remains true to that original style — a luscious barrel-aged wine that captures the crisp, vibrant character of the Sauvignon Blanc grape. The wine opens with floral aromas of orange blossom and jasmine merging with fresh citrus and a touch of mineral and toasted almond. Richly layered flavors of citrus and lychee fruit unfold on the palate. Thanks to barrel-fermentation and gentle stirr...

Rating: 92/100 - As reviewed by Wine & Spirits Magazine on 06/09. A blend of sauvignon blanc and a small amount of semillon (10 percent) from mature vines at Mondavi's To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, this wine ferments and ages in oak barrels. The scent of oak is primary in the young wine, balanced by plenty of passionfruit flavors that keep it mouthwatering. A meaty, complex white suited to bottle aging, this will match roast pheasant or guinea fowl.

8% Semillon. If nowhere near as ambitious or complex as the winery's Reserve bottling, this nicely composed and wonderfully well-balanced edition delivers lots of precise melon and fig fruit with sweet oak and deft touches of herbs in its service. Fleshy to start and firm at the finish, it hits the varietal mark smartly and will prove a versatile partner to a wide range of meaty fish and mild chicken dishes.
