(From 2004 Vintage) We planned from the beginning to grow world class Cabernet Sauvignon, and we spent two years looking for Napa Valley vineyard property. In 1984, we found the property that met our criteria. All we had to do was plant it. Now, years later, the vineyards sit at 250 feet above the main Napa Valley floor, with some parcels rising to almost 900 feet. The type of Cabernet we favor loves steep hillsides. The slope faces due south, maximizing exposure to the sun and guaranteeing proper ripeness. Conn Creek bisects the slope, so theres ample water. The soil is rocky, with a near-ideal combination of gravel read more...and clay; the vines must struggle to grow here, enhancing the flavors. In 2004 we harvested barely 20 tons of Cabernet Sauvignon from almost 12 acres of vines, less than 2 tons/acre. The wine, a beautiful dark purple, is rich and intense. It has all the flavor and complexity wed ever hoped for. (hide)
