Lateral is inspired by the famous wines of the St. Emilion district of Bordeaux. The blending of Merlot (54%) and Cabernet Franc (17%) is the cornerstone of this model. The interplay of these two grapes gives Lateral a complexity unlike most California blends. Also includes 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 6% Malbec.
Another key to Lateral’s consistent quality is the use of multiple vineyards from more than one region. Select sites from the cooler coastal valleys are chosen with primary consideration for the flavor their grapes can add. Winemakers Marty Mathis and Chris Condos have been carefully assembling the Lateral blend for more than fifteen years.
Aged for 22 months in 40% new oak, including 25% French oak, Lateral carries a level of polish rarely found in its price range. It’s ready to drink now, but has a weight worthy of comparisons to blends costing much more. Lateral serves perfectly for customers looking for a luxury wine that will not break their budget.
