Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(From 1997 Vintage) (10% Merlot; 4% Cabernet Franc). Mild and narrowly framed faintly raspberry-like fruit is teamed with touches of toast, mint and vanilla in the clean, comparatively low-keyed aromas here. The wine perks up as expected in the mouth, yet its somewhat complex, slightly closed flavors are rather more deep in fruit than first suggested. Still limited by tannin and a bit of acidic stiffness, this one makes a clear case for cellaring and should be held for five or six years.
Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(From 2003 Vintage) Oozing with sweet, black-cherryish fruit in the nose and on the front of the palate, this two-faced effort gives and then takes away as it heats up and dries out at the finish. Its uneven nature raises concerns about aging even though it has plenty of tannin to lose, and its future is at this point uncertain enough to cost it a chance for a star.
