Wine Description

This wine echoes past vintages of mineral black-fruit, toasty French oak, cassis and smoke characters. The aromas and flavors are very fruit-forward and the wine has a sweet entry turning to plush layers of cedar, tobacco, smoke and dark-chocolate. A long and complex finish follows. Upon further airing, the wine becomes even more velvety-chocolate in nature. This wine can be laid down for years, perhaps for as many as 20.  650 cases produced.

Volcanic Hill is comprised of 8 acres of south facing hillside vineyard.  It is the warmest of all our microclimates.  The color of the soil is gray, and the consistency is that of fluffy, volcanic ash, originally deposited from the eruption of Mt. Konocti 8 million years ago.

"Deep, rich and concentrated, with loamy earth, currant, dried berry, leather, peppery tobacco and sage flavors that are bold and, at points, fleshy in texture. Impressive for its depth, focus and complexity, with plenty of backbone for the cellar. Best from 2012 through 2020. 650 cases made. –JL" (10/31/2009)

    Competing for special honors with the Red Rock Terrace bottling in 2006, Volcanic Hill is similarly deep and well-filled with the solidity and focus that is the winery hallmark. It hints now at suppleness beneath its slightly gruff exterior, and, even if a touch grippy to finish, it avoids any acidy pitfalls, and it ends with an exceptionally long line of fruit. It is by small margin the most open of the Diamond Creek trio, but it still wants for patience to show its best face.
