The 2005 Twomey Merlot is voluptuous, robust and balanced. Deep garnet in color, it has an intensely concentrated nose of black cherry and blackberry, with undertones of wild game and freshly ground black pepper. On the palate, it is velvety and full-bodied, wtih fine tannins and a very long finish.
Connoisseurs' Guide to California WinesHeavy-handed oak is two-steps ahead of fruit here, and, while the wine may be full-bodied and highly extracted, it is also too tannic for its own good and suffers from a real lack of balance and brightness. Size and richness are often good things in wine, but they need fruit for balance. A big drop in price from its first posting is no help here.
