2005 Joseph Phelps Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Wine Description

(From 2010 Vintage) This is, as always, a gorgeous wine, rich, balanced and delicious. It shows classic Napa Valley ripeness, with blackberry jam, plum, dark chocolate and sweet oak flavors. Plush and velvety doesn’t begin to do it justice.

Winemaker's Notes

(From 2010 Vintage) The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is ultra-concentrated both in the nose and on the palate with aromas of blueberry, dark plum and Black Mission fig followed by cardamom, nutmeg, graphite, tobacco and vanilla bean. The sweet tannins are intertwined with flavors of anise, caramel cream, spicy black pepper and crushed blackberries, contributing to the long, lush finish.

Winemaker Notes The dark ruby-colored 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon resembles a classic Bordeaux both in aromatics and flavor. A rich bouquet of cinnamon, spice, licorice, graphite and caramel are followed by integrated layers of cherry, currant, fresh cream and balanced, sweet tannin, all of which contribute to a youthful, bright, multi-layered wine.

Definitely benefitted from a few hours in decanter. Overall the wine was surprisingly well balanced. The in your face boldness of a young cab had dissipated into a nice velvety texture. Blackberry and black plum, wet stone, white pepper. Long, pleasant finish.

"The restrained, European-styled 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits classic notes of cedar, black currants, menthol, and spice as well as excellent fruit, sweet tannin, delineation, and vibrant acidity. It should drink well for a decade."
