(2005 Vintage) All of the grapes in this Zinfandel come from Grgich Hills' organically farmed Calistoga vineyard. It has an aromatic bouquet of licorice, boysenberry, and a hint of cola, which leads into concentrated flavors of ripe black cherry and blackberry. Acidity and chewy tannins lead into a persistent licorice and black fruit finish.

Both of the Grgich Hills efforts are built along fairly firm lines, but whereas its pricey partner convinces in fruit, this comparatively stark wine lacks clear definition while coming up short on requisite flesh. Hard and drying with a rush of last-minute tannin, it needs lengthy aging and a full measure of luck to grow into beauty.
