still tannic but on tasting 2 days after being opened and kept under vacuum pump mechanism, the tannins were mellowed and the wine was easily approachable. Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(1998 Vintage) Alexander Valley. Toasty, charry notes and smells of burnt herbs give this wine a rather difficult beginning, and its mid-density fruit in the mouth runs into chalky tannins and intrusive bitter-ness as the wine crosses the palate.
