2005 Chateau Montelena The Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga Napa Valley

Wine Description

(From 2010 Vintage) The 2010 is shaping up to be another beauty. Violets, freshly cut flowers, mint, spice box and plums all jump from the glass in this vivid, beautifully delineated cabernet.

Winemaker's Notes

(From 2010 Vintage) One of the historical attributes of the Montelena Estate Cabernet has always been its age-ability and longevity; often though, this meant that the wine really needed to be cellared before it would show its true beauty. Well, here at Montelena we’re all about the pursuit of excellence, and have been working to expand that window of drinkability through careful changes in how we farm, pick, and ferment the grapes from this magnificent property. By focusing on precision viticulture techniques, small fermentation lots, and earlier integration of more precisely chosen barrels – matched to the unique characters of each lot – we have been able to make the wine more approachable at a younger age, while retaining the core elements that ensure a long life in the cellar. The only problem…you may need more of it.

tobacco, graphite, leather, raisin. has legs, medium-very dry, extremely dense color at rim. unbelievable!! 3/2013 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar Good deep ruby-red. Complex aromas of currant, licorice, graphite, bitter chocolate, smoked meat, tobacco and brown spices. Began juicy, penetrating and quite youthfully unevolved, but aeration brought a suppler, rounder texture and more generosity to this impressively structured wine. Complicating notes of bitter cherry, menthol and minerals. This will require a good eight to ten years of aging but the substantial tannins are sweet and lush. Very long, pure and powerful on the finish. (06/2008)

(From 1994 Vintage) Rating: 3/5 - As reviewed by Decanter. An intense nose of black cherries, leather and a touch of lanolin at the back. A mouthfilling yet smooth palate of spicy and well-integrated oak and dark black fruit with Morello cherries dominant.
