Over the years we have found that one of the best methods for achieving a friendly character in the bottle is to blend wines possessing different attributes – combining top-quality fruit from several microclimates in our small yet diverse Valley. Using about 25% mountain fruit offers an opaqueness and structure that enriches the sweet fruit of the Valley floor. Such blending is an important part of Caymus Cabernet and its rich yet accessible character. 2005 produced a Cabernet Sauvignon of contemporary potential, saturated with dark color and big, ripe fruit. (From 1986 Vintage) "In the blind tasting, I first thought this was a Spanish wine given the intense, pain grillee, toasty oak, and vanilla aromas. After ten minutes some of the oak dissipated, allowing the wine's flamboyant blackcurrant fruit to emerge. Full-bodied, exceptionally concentrated, with a seamless, velvety texture, and a marvelously long, opulent finish, this 1986 Cabernet tastes like a jar of jam on the palate, with great purity and staying power. Although it appears to be fully mature, it will last fo...

(From 1998 Vintage) While its cassis-like fruit and loamy earth accents mark it clearly as varietal, and its pleasant oak sweetness brings it an extra bit of immediate attraction, this tasty, mildly tannic Cabernet is easy enough to like, but nowhere does it show the kind of depth or drama that might reasonably be expected by its inflated price. It has a little room for improvement, and, while it may not grow for decades, it should soften a touch and fill out just a bit with three or four years of age.
