Wine Description

(From 2012 Vintage) The Sangiacomo West Rows are located in “the sweet spot” of Carneros, above the harsh winds originating from the Pacic Ocean. e vineyard is near the Sonoma Creek and benets from loamy soils, unlike the clay consistency of other nearby Carneros vineyards. Chosen as part of a group of select rows and blocks, these Wente clones have unique and consistent characteristics of the loam terrior and the climate of the Carneros region. 2013 was an intense harvest that tested our ability to execute farming practices on time with shortages in manpower. The normal 6-8 week harvest was done in 5, and in some cases we were picking all dierent varietals on the same day, at the same time. It was one of the earlier harvests to start and finish in a decade. Vines started their development quite early because of the dry weather, so, in effect there was plenty of “hang time”.

Winemaker's Notes

Benziger's style of Chardonnay is characterized by aromas and flavors of citrus, tropical fruits, pear and apple offset by notes of butter, hazelnut and nutmeg. The texture is marked by a lovely yeast component supported by good acids and a rich, silky mouthfeel. Medium bodied and buttery, the wine's finish is well integrated with good fruit intensity.

Unflattering suggestions of grass and old wood get a little more attention than they should owing to this vaguely citrusy effort's marked fruity shortfalls, and, if never a dirty wine, neither is it an especially well-filled one.
