Shafer's Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnays are not known for their subtlety, and this highly ripened, big-bodied version stays true to form. It delivers plenty of fruit and a full complement of sweet oak with palate-coating viscosity and no small measure of heat as the price of its considerable richness. It is kept on course by its fine sense of balance all the same, and, if not a wine for drinking with delicate foods, it will fill the bill nicely when the menu calls for something extra.
