2004 Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

Winemaker's Notes

(From 2001 Vintage) "The best Reserve offering since 1994 is the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, a 13,000-case blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Malbec and Petit Verdot. Half of the fruit emerges from the To-Kalon Vineyard. It possesses a pH of 3.7, and the alcohol is over 14%. 92 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate January 2006 A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, which mostly comes from To-Kalon, has a relatively small production in this vintage (7,500 cases). The wine has a dense purple color and a wonderful, sweet, almost St.-Julien like nose of licorice, red and black currants, cedar, and spice. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, but authoritatively flavored, this wine is still young, rich, and very fine. Tel. Dense, concentrated and persistent, with great depth and focus, ending with an amazingly long, richly flavored finish. Best from 2008 through 2018. 8,688 cases made. –JL

(From 1997 Vintage) Sweetened up with the lovely, decidedly creamy oak that is a Mondavi hallmark, this bright, young Cabernet displays plenty of fruity concentration and suggests raspberries and a touch of currants in both scent and taste. Its rounded, somewhat juicy flavors are surprisingly accessible now, and it would seem that no more than three or four years of age are needed to bring this one to its polished best.
