(2004 Vintage) "This reflects the vintage in its beefy richness, while it follows Cáceres's modern style in the polish and elegance of its tannin. The fruit develops definition with air, tasting of tiny cherries and red currants. For the cellar, or give it time in a decanter for lamb chops off the grill...91" Wine and Spirits 12/09
Arch-classic producer Marqués de Cáceres delivers another refined, complex, elegant gran reserva with this 2004. I appreciate the balance between old and new school styles - this sits comfortably between the two, with neither the excessive American oak and harsh, lean fruit of the bad old style, nor the exaggerated, over ripe chocolaty-oak character of the bad new style. It's just about perfect. The palate is fine gained and refined, with a firm, dusty texture and impressively wide range of flavours. Lingering finish. All class; ready to drink or hold mid-term. Score: 92 (John Szabo, MS, WineAlign.com, Feb 2013) Wine Enthusiast - Rioja, Spain- "Sweet berry aromas offer touches of marzipan and leather...palate is ripe, vibrant and grabby, with full tannins framing plum and berry flavors along with accents of tobacco and earth. Lightly oaky on the finish, with a vanilla note and dryness...good weight and clarity." This Bodega has been making wine since the 1960s and is based in one of the best areas of Rioja - Rioja Alta. Only produced in 'very good' or 'excellent' vintages, the Reserva is matured for 26 months in French oak and up to 3 years in bottle. Aromas of spices, cedar, blackberries and chocolate combine to give impressive complexity on the nose. The palate has intense, yet soft fruity and vanilla flavours with an excellent structure. Ready to drink now, it’s also a wine to keep in the cellar. An ideal wine to match with game, lamb, beef or mature/blue cheeses. 91 Points - Wine Spectator: "Lively and fresh, this focused red offers plum, mineral, sanguine and tobacco notes backed by firm tannins and good acidity. Though supple, this drives through the spicy finish. Drink now through 2020. 2,000 cases imported." -TM , -Issue: May 31, 2012
