2004 Kenwood Vineyards Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County

Wine Description

(From 2006 Vintage) The bouquet begins with fruity aromas of dried cherries, blueberries and cassis and is followed by spicy aromatic notes of sage and sassafras. The mouthfeel of the wine is full bodied with well-structured tannins, flavors of pomegranate and hints of vanilla. This wine is delicious now and should continue to improve for at least a decade.

Winemaker's Notes

(From 2006 Vintage) The grapes used to craft each Artist Series release are as carefully selected as the artwork that will grace the bottle. Each year, Winemaker Pat Henderson selects the finest small lots of Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and skillfully blends them to produce this Kenwood classic. While the winemaking philosophy of using only the most superior Cabernet fruit never changes, the style of Kenwood's Artist Series Cabernet has evolved over the years. The initial style of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon fruit with lots of oak aroma and flavor has evolved to a lighter Bordeaux-style blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc) with subtle oak complexity.

There is no question but that this somewhat raw-edged effort is light on refinement, but its lack of manners can be blamed on youth as much as anything else, and its solid, well-defined fruit is a good guarantor that time is on its side. It may never be the picture of grace, but it will make a satisfying foil to hearty meat dishes some five or six years hence.
