Azelia Barolo San Rocco

Wine Details

Wine Description

(2009 Vintage) A cuirassier. Fleshy, extremely focused. Here Serralunga is present with signs of licorice, spices and dark fruits. Cherry, currant and blueberry melt harmoniously together. Velvety and sweetly ripe, with splendidly integrated tannins. San Rocco gives an impression of great power, austerity, with an incredible aging potential. Pure complexity. A strong character. Monumental.

"The 2004 Barolo San Rocco, from a vineyard in Serralunga, is an explosive, structured wine bursting with black cherries, violets, menthol and tar. Full-bodied and ample on the palate, it possesses outstanding balance and an utterly engaging personality that makes it an absolute joy to taste. The San Rocco is always the most complete of the Azelia Barolos, and it is a wine I seek out in nearly every vintage. A recent bottle of the 2003 was also superb. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2024."

Good medium red. Bright aromas of plum, tobacco, marzipan and licorice. Tightly wound and rather sinewy today, dominated by its strong acid/tannin spine. Tough going at present, even a bit astringent on the back end. This chewy young Barolo reminded me of a big young Taurasi. Is it too tannic for its own good?
