2003 Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia

Wine Description

(From 2005 Vintage)

Born in a cooler than usual year, the aromatic complexity and freshness of the 2005 Ornellaia reflect the conditions of the harvest. The delayed harvest resulted in perfectly ripe tannins that are soft and silky.

Deep ruby red in colour, this wine has an elegant, complex bouquet with red and black berry fruit supported by underlying hints of tobacco and spice. On the palate, the wine is full and enveloping, displaying a powerful, extremely elegant densely woven tannic structure that flows into a long fruity finish with balsamic overtones. 56% Cabernet Sauvignon; 27% Merlot; 12% Cabernet Franc; 5% Petit Verdot.

Ornellaia, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia’s flagship wine, was first produced with vintage 1985, from an extremely careful selection of the vineyards grown on the Estate. Produced in limited quantities, hand-crafted and vinified with the utmost care and attention to detail, Ornellaia has constantly received top ratings from the most influential opinion leaders around the world.

Vintage 2005 marked the 20th anniversary of Ornellaia, which was celebrated with numerous events all over the globe and with the creation of special anniversary large-size bottles.

95 Points, Wine Spectator:

"Displays beautiful aromas of ripe fruit, with currant, plum and blackberry. This complex and full-bodied Tuscan red has soft, polished tannins and a long, long finish. Shows a deft hand in the winemaking. Best after 2012. 11,660 cases made. –JS" (10/31/2008)

93 Points, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate:

"The medium-bodied 2005 Ornellaia shows plenty of delineation in its dark cherries, blueberries, spices, minerals and crushed rocks. The 2005 doesn’t have the detail of the 2004 or the richness of the 2006, but it does offer notable finesse and clarity in an understated style for this wine. My impression is that this will be a relatively early-maturing vintage of Ornellaia, which is not a bad thing, considering the age-worthiness of the two vintages which surround it. In 2005 Ornellaia is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. It is a big success in this vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020."

Winemaker's Notes

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot Ornellaia 2003 is a wine that shows the great ripeness of the vintage through its abundant ripe fruit flavours, scents of exotic spices and a rich and generous texture. The important proportion of Cabernet franc and the Petit Verdot add their complex aromatics, their freshness that together with the wine’s richness give a bottle of great harmony and balance.

It gains definition with air, leading with black cherry and ripe fig flavors backed by savory, slightly herbaceous tannins. Cellar it for eight years and then decant for a grilled ribeye.

(From 2006 Vintage) The main characteristic of Ornellaia 2006 is without a doubt its lush depth and a-exuberancea (aLaEsuberanzaa). Here is apowerful, concentrated wine whose intensity is immediately obvious. Its complex, rich bouquet is complemented bysweet, dense-packed tannins and a lively acidity, and all of its components are in admirable harmony creating a veryelegant wine.
