It was considered by The Regulating Council as a GOOD Vintage. This year we were producing from 155 ha. of the 170 own by us in our 4 vineyards: “Viña Tondonia”, “Viña Cubillo”, “Viña Gravonia” y “Viña Bosconia”. The yields were very high considering that this year could have been more difficult due to the heat wave that affected our vineyards from May until the beginning of September. The vines recovered thanks to the rain of the month of September. The harvest started in September 24th and lasted until October 23rd. Therefore, it was one of the longest harvests in the history of our house. This was due to the fact that we wanted the grapes to take maximum advantage of the late September rain. Our experience due to the fact that our vineyards age average is quite high allow the vines to survive without suffering hydric stress and made rich and round wines capable to be stored for a long time.
Year rated as excellent by the Regulatory Board of Rioja. This year we had in operation 157 170 hectares of property. The harvest in our vineyards was 890,475 kg of grapes. The absence of spring frosts and good environmental conditions favoring fertilization and fruit set of grapes and offset the damaging effects of pests such as rust mites and thrips attacked buds at the time of sprouting and budding, slowed by low temperatures at that stage of the growing season made this would translate into an abundant harvest. Despite suffering an unstable and stormy summer, this high amount of harvest reached high levels of quality thanks to ideal climatic conditions of October fresh and light which allowed us to carry out the work of comfortable vintage and staggered, brooding each one of the varieties in his ripeness point, mature and balanced without compromising at any time the perfect health of the grapes. The work began in vineyard vintage Tondonia on 11 October.
Surprisingly balanced for 2003. The fruit is still there (dark berries) but complemented with tobacco and sous bois. After 30mins in the glass, this wine is AWESOME!
This one is opening up faster than the Tondonia... More chocolate / coffee flavors than Tondonia too. Definitely bigger / richer / more expressive.
nutty, apricot almost sherry like taste
International Wine Cellar(1998 Vintage) Dark red. Penetrating, complex bouquet of red berries, cherry skin, minerals, dried rose, tobacco , cured meat and baking spices. Youthfully taut, but opens slowly to show de ep cherry and plum flavors with suggestions of succulent herbs and graphite. This medium-bodied wine b roadens on the back, the intensely flavored fruit softening and sweetening. A remarkably elegant, balanced and complex wine that's still very young : I'd give it at least another five years of bottle aging.
