(2010 Vintage) Madre - born with the 2001 vintage - is the newest wine of the range by Poggio Antico. It received international recognition from its first release earning #77 in the “Top 100 Wines of 2004” by the US magazine “Wine Enthusiast”, beside also having been chosen as Editor’s Pick and included in “The Year must-have Wines”. The name “Madre” comes from the homonymous property, which has always been part of the Poggio Antico estate. This location is facing south-southwest and it is well protected from the northern winds and consequently from the risk of late frosts. Its position – particularly favorable – and its average altitude (about 380 meters a.s.l.) ensure a perfect ripening of the grapes. The soil is rich in clay and stone and guarantees optimum drainage. Madre vineyard, of about 11 hectares, has been planted partially in 1997 and partially in 2001, with mainly Sangiovese and, on a smaller surface, with Cabernet Sauvignon. The vine density varies from 5,000 to 6,000 vines per hectare. About 5 hectares of this vineyard are dedicated to the production of our new wine Madre, made with 50% of Sangiovese and 50% of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines obtained from these two varietals are aged separately for 18 months in 500-liter French oak tonneaux and they are then blended together. Once bottled, Madre refines in the bottle for an additional 12 months before it is released.
