(2012 Vintage) On October 13, 2009, 5 inches of rain arrived just after we picked, kicking off the 2010 winter season. Thirsty vines got a drink, but temperatures remained fairly warm following the rainfall allowing the vines time to produce spring reserves to rely on for nourishment before going dormant. Spring months were cool and wet with rainfall through June 1st totaling 44 inches, 10 inches above normal, and successful flowering took place after the rain stopped. The crop load was well balanced for healthy vine growth, and we enjoyed one of the mildest summers in memory. Developing fruit was never harmed by heat spikes. Verasion was not complete until the end of August, two weeks behind normal. Heat increased, but not to extremes and ripening was slow but even. Flavor, color and extract reached peak levels without the loss of critical acidity or the development of burnt character. Everything happening at the right time and to perfection. There you have it, the “why” about the quality of 2010.
