(From 2001 Vintage) This open and inviting Pinot Noir begins with aromas of rose petal, black tea, tart cherry and spice. The rich fruit flavors and vibrant acidity keep the wine well-lifted on the palate. The round, fine-grained tannins and wonderful oak integration carry through on the finish, which is persistent with hints of orange zest and minerality. This young wine will continue to evolve for several more years and promises exceptional complexity and age-worthiness.
Connoisseurs' Guide to California WinesThere is a great deal of richness evident in this wine, and that is no more than one expects based on its past successes, but it is also true that this edition is surprisingly dry and a little too coarse for its own good. The culprit in the piece seems to be a modest shortfall of fruity depth and energy, but there is enough of each to gain a one-star rating.
