Wine Description

(From 2004 Vintage) Cos d'Estournel has become, in the eyes of the Great Wine lovers, the archetype of a certain style of virile elegance where the power excludes neither grace nor sweetness. Impressive in his youth by the intensity of its structure and the brilliance of its fruit, the wine of Cos d'Estournel evolves slowly to reach its full maturity (between 10 and 30 years) a melted and a wonderful aromatic complexity. The great vintages can achieve exceptional longevity, exceeding the century.

Winemaker's Notes

(From 1990 Vintage) Weather conditions were perfect. It is unusual to have three very great vintages one after the other with quite different styles. 1990 is better structured than 1989 and more tender than 1988. There is a particularly striking harmony between the Merlot and the Cabernet-Sauvignon. Very dark color. Intense, fruity, roasted bouquet, with hints of caramel, spices, nutmeg, sandalwood and menthol. Imposing in the mouth, perfectly well structured, well bred and brilliant. Soft, compact tannin. Silky, pe...

WA98 Drink 2006 - 2036 The prodigious, fantastic 2003 Cos d’Estournel is a candidate for “wine of the vintage.” A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon (unusually high for this chateau), 30% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, 17,500 cases were produced from low yields. An inky/blue/purple color is accompanied by a compelling perfume of black fruits, subtle smoke, pain grille, incense, and flowers. With extraordinary richness, full body, and remarkable freshness, elegance, and persistence, this is one of the finest wines ever made by this estate. The good news is that it will be drinkable at a young age yet evolve for three decades or more. Kudos to winemaker Jean-Guillaume Prats and owner Michel Reybier.

Drank at Dwight's on 2.19.16 - amazing! Again, thank you Manny! ❤️🍷. If you are fortunate enough to own or find a bottle, please decant it. It opens up beautifully and the last glass is absolutely perfect! (Why is the LAST glass always the perfect one?!). I was so surprised at the mellow flavors and how well they melded together. A little sediment but that never bothers me, especially when decanted. This is so smooth, fruity - one of the richest Bordeaux we've had the pleasure of experiencing.

(From 2004 Vintage) "Loads of currant and blackberry, with hints of Indian spices. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Round and generous for the vintage. Best after 2011. 15,000 cases made."
